Most of the social media platforms try to keep their algorithms a mystery. Instagram however, seems to be breaking the pattern by publishing a detailed blog about how its algorithm works and ranks Feeds, Reels, Stories and Explore.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri started the blog by saying that they want to do a better job in earning the trust of their users by providing ample information about how the application works. It was definitely a bold step but Mosseri says that they want to clear all the misconceptions surrounding Instagram and for doing so they answered a number of questions like, “How does Instagram decide what to show me in Explore?” and “Why do some of my posts get more views than other?”

Mosseri notes, “One of the main misconceptions we want to clear up is the existence of ‘The Algorithm’. Instagram doesn’t have one algorithm that oversees what people do and don’t see on the app.”

Mosseri explains that Instagram works on a variety of algorithms. the idea behind these algorithms, processes and classifiers is to make it possible to experience the huge amount of content on Instagram in a better way.

When asked about how the posts gets ordered and organized, Mosseri explained, “We want to make the most of your time, and we believe that using technology to personalize your experience is the best way to do that. Each part of the app – Feed, Explore, Reels – uses its own algorithm tailored to how people use it. People tend to look for their closest friends in Stories, but they want to discover something entirely new in Explore. We rank things differently in different parts of the app, based on how people use them.”

Along with this, the blog also explains the concept of “Shadow Ban” which is a term used to describe various experiences on the platform. The blog tries to explain every experience and what it means. Mosseri also says that a user can have some influence on the algorithm and thus, on what he/she eventually see on Instagram.

Instagram broke the mold in contrast to other popular services by giving a detailed explanation about its algorithms to the users. This blog will probably be the first of many blogs that are likely to be published by various social media platforms in future.
